About Marques Johnson

M

arques E. Johnson is a proud New Jersey native, born and raised in Atlantic City. Since taking his first steps, he has known what living a life of service means. Having been raised by his grandparents, Marques and his family were heavily involved at the Salvation Army, where they attended church services and volunteered on a regular basis.

Marques would go on to study Family and Child Services at Montclair State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. Even then, he still found a way to be involved with the Salvation Army, where joined in Paterson, New Jersey and eventually went on to be the Divisional Dance Leader for the New Jersey Division of the Salvation Army.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Marques worked for Atlantic County Social Services, where he worked with children and families, evaluating programs and services offered to the community. It was there he knew he would dedicate his life to making the lives of others better.

Marques later attended Rutgers University, where eventually earned his Masters of Social Work. During that time, he was also employed by the Department of Residence Life. While at Rutgers, Marques revolutionized the thought process behind on-campus programming by incorporating higher education theory into awe-inspiring theatrical performances that he produced, inspiring many collaborators and artistic contributors along the way.

Although he has a natural gift for the arts, helping others has always been his true calling. Marques currently serves as the Director of Residence Life at Monroe College. With his professional background in social work, Marques has dedicated himself to higher education and student development. His passion is working with students from diverse populations, collaborating with his team to create thought-provoking program and innovative services that foster opportunities for students to challenge themselves and each other in positive, productive ways.

It has been his life’s story, a journey that has been full of experiences from different people, from different walks of life, that has influenced Marques to launch his latest initiative, The Experience by Marques J; a movement that inspires others to take an introspective look at their own lives and experiences, and from that, begin to become a catalyst of positive energy that impacts others.
